Abstract

The aquatic fern, Salvinia molesta, has been studied on several occasions as a potential plant  in photoremediation. This study worked on improving on results of two most recent works regarding the plant's efficacy of reducing a range of waster water components including chromium, nitrates, phosphates, sulfates, dissolved oxygen, plankton, and pH, where conflicting findings has been found on these specific parameters. Specifically, this study determined the changes in the amounts of the said parameters after a prolonged exposure of sewage water to Salvinia for 30 days and established the significance of these changes. Removal efficiencies were also computed for each parameterThree replicates for both control and experiment were set in an improvised greenhouse. Water analysis was done in 0, 15th, 20th, 25th, and 30th day intervals. Standard analyses for specific parameters were utilized according to the method prescribed by Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). 


After 30 days of exposure, results show a reduction in plankton and a highly significant in reduction in phosphate and dissolved oxygen from the sewage water. There was no noted efficient removal for chromium, nitrate, and sulfate. To conclude, results confirmed that findings of the previous studies on the capacity of Savinia molesta after 15 days and further after 20 days. No significant reduction beyond 20 days were observed,
